CHARLOTTE, N.C., June 9 (UPI) -- U.S. Customs and Border
Protection announced Monday 11.2 pounds of hashish have been seized
at a Charlotte, N.C., airport.
The agency said agriculture specialists at Charlotte/Douglas
International Airport found about $144,000 worth of the drug hidden
inside 16 wooden clothing hangers and the rails of three suitcases
during a routine baggage examination Wednesday.
The drugs were found in luggage belonging to three people
traveling as a group, Customs and Border Protection said. The
suspects were turned over to local authorities.
"CBP agriculture specialists have the primary duty of
protecting the nation's food supply and agriculture industry from
pests and diseases," said CPB Atlanta Director Robert Gomez. "Their
ability to be vigilant and on the lookout for smuggled drugs is
highly commendable. This case clearly demonstrates the broad range
of responsibilities carried out by CBP agriculture officers with
positive results."
