        WASHINGTON, March 11 (UPI) -- The Boeing Co. of Seattle,
Wash., won a $300 million Pentagon contract Friday to further
develop the Airborne Laser program.
        The Airborne Laser is a 747-jet outfitted with a chemical
laser meant to shoot down enemy missiles in the earliest stage of
their lift off, called "boost phase."
        Boeing's first award on the contract is worth $38 million,
and will be applies to testing and development.
