SCOTTSDALE, Ariz., March 12 (UPI) -- Robert McCall, an
artist whose paintings helped NASA promote its space mission, died
of heart failure in Arizona, his wife Louise said.
McCall, 90, created hundreds of vivid paintings of space
exploration but his most famous work may be a gargantuan mural that
hangs in the lobby of the National Air and Space Museum in
Washington, The New York Times reported Friday.
The six-story tall mural, viewed by millions of people each
year, depicts events from the creation of the universe to men
walking on the Moon.
McCall, born in Columbus, Ohio, studied at an art school
before serving in the Army Air Force during World War II.
Science writer Isaac Asimov once described McCall as the
closest thing "we have to an artist-in-residence in outer space,"
the Arizona Republic reported.
Louise McCall said her husband was working until the day he
died, Feb. 26.
