An exercise I liek to put out is this:
A human flight to Mars will occupy about four years, onclusing the
dwell time on Mars and the roundtrip by Hohmann trajectory. Assume a
crew of three human, any mix of gender.
Keep a tally of al the consumibles you and a three-perosn
household go thru in a three-year period. You can do this for a month
or so and proportion to 3 years.
This tally must include EVERYTHING you eat, use, keep on stock.
Food, drink, paper, pen refills, tissues, printer output, razor
blaades, hygenic spray, sopa, computer discs,
Also tlyyy all the things you discard in that 3-uear period.
Include humman waste, discharges from sickness (pus, vomit), normal
emission (sweat, snot), used paper, tissues, empty boxes, cartons,
bottles, cans, broken or wornout items (socks, umbrellas, tools).
After you accumlated this list. Imagine that ALL OF THE INGREDIENT
ITEMS must be brought eith you to Mars. In one flight (even if by
multiple spaceships). There is NO reprovision or resupply services
along the way and there is NO feasible way to exploit the surface
material on Mars.
Imagine, too, that for the most part, because of the no-litter
treaties and rules against contamination of other worlds, you must
BRING BACK ALL THE EGREDIENT ITEMS. No fair dumping anything in space
along the way. Even you human discahrges must be returned for fear
they contain microbs that could survive and run riot on Mars.
You now have a better picture of what it takes to mount a human
mission to Mars.
