STS-117 Launch Weather Forecast

Synoptic Discussion:
A high pressure ridge over South Florida is migrating north. Due to the
lighter southwest winds over Central Florida, a sea breeze will develop
this afternoon along the coast. Also, moisture is increasing in the
atmosphere over Central Florida; therefore, afternoon thunderstorms,
including the potential for severe weather, are forecast for Kennedy Space
Center today.
As the ridge continues to move northward through Friday, Central Florida
will continue to have afternoon thunderstorms each day. By Friday, the
high pressure ridge will be over the Central Florida area, allowing the
sea breeze with associated weather to push inland away from the coast by
the late afternoon and evening. Upper level winds will be from the east
Friday, so anvils from inland thunderstorms should remain inland by launch
time.
Our primary concern for launch day is thunderstorms with associated anvils.
