I saw this link on Slashdot. Why should they have all the fun? The
STS-114 video is different than what we've seen so far from the ET
camera. I wonder why? This is the outfit that built the camera, from
what I can tell, so you'd think they would have the _best_ video
available; but this looks really crappy. They have video from STS-112
also, as well as an assortment of other launches they've been involved with.

What's interesting about the high-quality MPEG on Ecliptic's web site
is that you can spot one of the gap fillers working its way loose on
the starboard side of the vehicle as it's going through Max-Q, and see
the nose landing gear door tile chip off right around the throttle up
call.

They don't downlink Quicktime or MPEG2, but analog video, and it is compressed
by various people with different skills and different target intentions.
Maybe not even their staff is getting hands on the original material/signals,
depending on the contract.
The guys that prepare the web pages certainly do not apply scientific analysis
expections to their work. Otherwise they would choose to offer the stuff
fullres and uncompressed.

I never noticed that before on the other video feeds, and the first time I
thought it could be just some banding effect from the encoding, but I can see
it in both MPEG and Quicktime, and it's only visible on the tank surface, not
the SRBs, shuttle, etc.
If you watch the ET surface in front of the camera, you notice a lot of
vibration and shaking on the surface of the foam. If that's really vibration,
it's in fact impressing that only parts of that foam break loose.
But it's hard to tell. The foam surface is a large, more or less solid coloured
spot there, and the shaking could be due to the motion estimation process
within the video encoding. Would really like to see this hires and
uncompressed. It is clear, though, that the shuttle and SRBs are not shaking by
the same amount - at least not in the video.
I'm also wondering wether the camera used imagestabilization techniques. I
would have expected a lot more vibration in the ascent video. Instead the video
looks like a smooth ride, even though the camera is fixed mounted to the tank.

What you saw vibrating was not the surface of the ET - it was the LOX
feedline, upon which the camera was mounted.
