Since the Soyuz cosmonauts and astronauts ride home on the "old" Soyuz
(leaving the one that they flew up in at the ISS), I assume that they
transfer the seat liners to the "old" Soyuz? (Since each of the seat liners
are custom jobs to fit their intended cosmonaut/astronaut.)
Does this mean that if the shuttle is carrying an astronaut/cosmonaut that
is planning on staying at the ISS, they also take up a seat liner with the
shuttle for him or her in case they need to leave the ISS with a Soyuz in an
emergency?
Is it absolutetly, no-question-about-it, even really necessary to have to
use the custom seat liners or are they more of a creature comfort?

Hi!
As far as i recall, the german astronaut currently staying at the ISS
officially became a expedition 13 member when he transferred his seat liner
to the sojuz...

Actually even more symbolic than you may think.
In the current events, the expedition 13 crews have their seat liners in
the old soyuz.
Thomas Reiter (and the other 2 crewmembers) has had his seat liner in
the "old" soyuz.
Mrs Ansari came up with her seat liner in the new soyuz.
Mr Reiter remains on the station. So at one point this week, Mrs Ansari
will switch her seat from the new soyuz to the old one. Tomas Reiter
will switch his seat from the old soyuz to the new one, at which point
he also switches from expedition 13 to expedition 14 crewmember.
Expedition 13 returns 2 crewmembers with Mrs Ansari in the old soyuz.
The location of your seat dictates which Soyuz you use in case of an emergency.

That seatliner was brought up together with Thomas Reiter onboard
Discovery. Allthough Thomas is scheduled back in December on the next
Discovery flight, the seatliner is indeed cusom built for use inside a
Soyuz.
