1- NASA expects to develop portable high pressure O2 bottles that could
be shipped up on Progress or ATV to refuel the Quest O2 tanks.

2- NASA is currently allowed by law to purchase transport from Russians
only until 2011. NASA expects private industry to be able to resupply
the station after that time. ( Does anyone really believe that some
private enterprise in the USA would be able to build a ship that can not
only launch but also dock to the ISS, undock and de-orbit by 2011 ?)

No mention on how US crewmembers would be transported to/from station
post 2011.

"march" was mentioned for ATV. Not sure if the NASA guy meant launch of
docking.

Dragon is the only possibility that comes to mind, by 2011? We'll have
to see

Launch of atv March, Docking early April unless they need something of
course, as its carrying cargo.

Yes, I think the US need to find a way to paint themselves out of the corner
which they get into in 20011. Not only have they got n o way to get large
items back from the station, but they are going to have to overturn the law
and get more Russian flights as well, unless they sub contract the US work
through ESA crew.

Options.
Extent life of Shuttle.
Problems, launch pad required, External tank facility required, and of
course money!
or, Purchase from Russia. A bit of a problem in law just now.
ESA buy Soyuz, make modifications and launch from their site.
Snagas, Only the Shuttle option gives down cargo facility.

Could private enterprise have anything of help in a couple of years. I doubt
it, but hope springs eternal.

Some kind a rudimentary re entry module for large cargo might be possible,
but I'm not holding my breath.

They certainly can. The question is will they? To do this, they're
required to spend a lot of their own money, which is something that the
traditional space companies the US have yet to do.

ARCTUS seems doable (inflatable heat shield seems like a challenge):

SpaceX Dragon also seems doable (if they can get Falcon 9 up and running):

The Constellation Services International, Inc. (CSI) / Space Systems/Loral
approach not only looks doable, but it looks to be cheaper in the long run
with its low cost, disposable cargo containers. The expensive tug (based on
SS/L's 1300 spacecraft bus) gets reused and potentially even refueled.

There are other proposals, but I'm not going to include every single on of
them here.

I'll admit I haven't been following all of this very closely, but many of
the proposals look technically very solid. Funding for these seems to be a
bigger issue than any sort of technical challenge. In fact, I really like
the CSI / SS/L proposal since it seems the least technically challenging,
even though it doesn't seem to (at least initially) support cargo return to
the earth.
